Legal
Privacy Policy.
This policy explains what information Old Norse Translator (the “Site”) collects, how it is used, and the choices you have. The short version: we collect as little as possible, we never sell your data, and you do not need an account to use the Site.
Last updated: October 2, 2026
1. Who we are.
“Old Norse Translator,” “we,” “us,” and “our” refer to the operators of this website, available at oldnorsetranslator.net. Questions about this policy can be sent tocontact@oldnorsetranslator.com.
2. Information we collect.
The Site is a static website with no user accounts, so the data we handle is minimal:
- Text you submit for translation. Text entered into the translator is sent to our server so it can be processed. It is held only in a temporary, in-memory cache (up to 24 hours) to speed up repeat lookups on the same instance, and it is not written to a permanent database or linked to you.
- Theme preference. Your light/dark mode choice is stored in your own browser's
localStorage. It never leaves your device. - Server logs. Like most websites, our hosting provider automatically records standard technical request data — IP address, browser/user agent, referring page, and timestamp — for security, abuse prevention, and aggregate traffic statistics.
- Contact messages. If you email us, we receive whatever you choose to include, such as your email address and message.
We do not collect names, phone numbers, payment details, precise location, or any account credentials, because there are none to collect.
3. How we use information.
- To provide and operate the translation, rune, dictionary, and learning tools.
- To keep the Site secure, prevent abuse, and diagnose technical problems.
- To understand aggregate usage (for example, which tools are most used) so we can improve them.
- To respond to messages you send us.
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising or marketing profiles.
4. Cookies and local storage.
We do not set advertising or tracking cookies. The only browser storage we use is a singlelocalStorage key for your theme preference. Any cookies you encounter are set by the infrastructure that serves or delivers the page (for example, hosting-provider load-balancing or security cookies) rather than by us, and they are used only to deliver the Site reliably.
5. Third-party services.
To function, the Site relies on a small number of third-party services:
- Hosting / CDN — the Site is hosted on Vercel, which processes request data (including IP addresses) as described in its own privacy policy.
- Web fonts — typefaces are served by Google Fonts, which receives your IP address when a font is requested.
- Reference lookups — for words missing from our offline dictionary, the server queries open knowledge APIs, including Wiktionary and Hugging Face inference. The word or sentence you searched is sent to these services; it is not sent with identifying information about you.
These providers process data under their own terms and policies.
6. Data retention.
Translation requests are kept only in a temporary in-memory cache for up to 24 hours. Server logs are retained by our hosting provider for a short operational period for security and statistics. Emails you send us are kept only as long as needed to handle your request. When data is no longer needed, it is deleted or aggregated.
7. Children's privacy.
The Site is a general-audience educational tool and is not directed at children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
8. Your rights.
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access to, correction of, or deletion of personal information we hold about you, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. Because we hold almost no personal data, most requests can be answered by simply deleting your browser storage and clearing your cache. To make a request, emailcontact@oldnorsetranslator.com.
9. Security.
We use reasonable technical measures — encrypted transport (HTTPS), minimal data collection, and access limited to what the Site needs to run. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
10. Changes to this policy.
We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page always reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be posted on this page.
